Conquering painting procrastination

Can you believe twelve years of procrastination? Yikes, I'm blushing as I type! I even spelled out the number instead of using the numeral in hopes that it would not emphasize such a long period of time. I confess it has taken me over a decade~ now that really sounds like forever~ to finish a paint project in a bedroom in our home.

I kept telling myself that "really, it looks fine the way it is...such a slight shade in color will not make that much difference, so why make the extra effort?" I have painted walls and ceilings in our house too many times to count. I like to change colors. I like to experiment with paint. But for some reason, the area below the chair rail in one bedroom has been neglected over the years. The area above the chair rail has worn several different hues. But the bottom section of the walls have forever been white.

In the photo above, you can see the white paint below the chair rail. If you look closely, the fabric on the chair had an oh-so-subtle off-white background. The difference between the wall and the chair was not stark, but just off enough to keep hearing that little voice saying "paint me off-white." Night lighting made the contrast show up even more.

Below you can see what I mean from another angle. (Unfortunately, the photo only shows a tiny snippet of the chair fabric.) The paint on the upper area is Valspar Grand Hotel Mackinac Blue.

I decided to use Valspar Cream in My Coffee. To be honest, I had almost 3/4 of a gallon left over from painting another room. (I love shopping my paint supply on-hand. The price is always right!) If you look closely in this next photo, you can see where I have painted the wall on the left side of the door, but not the right yet.

The room feels cozier and more complete now. The white furniture no longer fades into the background. And most of all, the background on the chair fabric doesn't appear to be dingy against the white walls.

Do you have a double-digit procrastination paint project?

Not double digit, but it's creeping up on me in my kids' rooms. They've got painted tongue and groove that's linen white. It was freshly painted before we moved in which was just a few years ago. Somehow that few years turned into 8 and the shabbiness is pretty bad. I keep saying maybe this winter. Clearly I'm in good company! Your room is beautiful, either way. Hope you've had a great summer!
