DIY Burlap chandelier shade

Do you have elements in your home that have caused you to simply develop a blind spot over time when you are near them? I admit that is the case for me with my dining room light fixture. I've contemplated and daydreamed about replacements, but it never seems to be a top priority in the budget. Last Christmas, I played around with embellishing (ha ha) my inherited-with-the-house 1970s Lucite and glass chandelier here.

Recently I decided to challenge myself to create an inexpensive update! I use burlap in different areas in my home. Its texture and rustic and casual look appeals to me. After finding inspiration in various burlap chandeliers and shades, I came up with my own. Below is a pictorial review of my solution.

Cut burlap to appropriate size for frame. Measure and mark for grommets.

Trim frays and iron burlap fabric.

Spread freezer paper out on work surface. Apply decoupage medium to burlap.

Let decoupage thoroughly dry. Hang on chandelier frame.

I removed the Lucite pieces of the chandelier before hanging the burlap. I left the glass crystals on the fixture. See how they shine through with the bulbs lit.

UPDATED LOOK

Maybe I will see more clearly now when I walk into my dining room!

Ann, This is a brilliant (pun intended) idea! I love your creative update. The burlap shade looks chic and modern. One of the best DYI's I have seen!
I hope you will stop by StoneGable and share this chandy shade at TUTORIALS TIPS AND TIDBITS, my weekly linky party. Link goes live tonight (Wednesday) at 8:00 pm.
